Supermom Series 3: Making Resolutions with Beth Tait

I am really happy to have Beth of My So-Called Blog, answering my Supermom questions:
What is one thing you plan to do in 2011 to:
• Be a better mom
• Be a better wife
• Be a better self
Beth is wonderfully real and down to earth. She's open and kind, and very musically gifted. One thing I really admire about Beth is she seems to always be trying. Trying to be better, to move forward, to be creative, to succeed. It's refreshing to say the least! Oh, and those kids of hers? Next to Maya, Audrey might be the cutest thing I've seen in a pair of purple converse.

It's official! Supermom Series 3 is underway. What is the Supermom Series? It's a way to showcase great women—real moms—to connect, relate, and be inspired. To view past series, just head over to the sidebar and click on "supermoms." This year I asked the Supermoms to make some resolutions for the new year. Here's what they will be answering for us:

What is one thing you plan to do in 2011 to:
• Be a better mom
• Be a better wife
• Be a better self

Today we have April Kennedy of FUNKY VINTAGE KITCHEN. Isn't she a doll? Let's see what she has to say about her goals for 2011.

A girl after my own heart

I came across these shots from our trip to Mesa, AZ over the holidays. Maya was in LOVE with these guys. And they were in LOVE with the apples we kept bringing them...

Finn turns 4!

My little man is getting so big! He had a fabulous fourth birthday yesterday. We hit up the Zoo, ate burgers, had cupcakes (with no rhyme or reason to the candles), watched movies, and opened lots of exciting presents. He felt very special, indeed!
Maya thought it was pretty sweet, too... :)

Ode to January, which is entirely not wintery enough for me at the moment...

    "Winter Beach" (source)

Winter, oh winter, where did you go?
We've balmy bright days instead of the snow.
In South California, no snowballs to throw,
Just t-shirts up top, and shorts down below.

Winter, dear winter, you've forgotten to call!
You breezed right on by in to time at all.
The leaves on the trees were just starting to fall,
Now flowering blooms are appearing—the gall!

Winter, please winter. Don't go just yet...
I long for the chilly, the rainy, the wet.
My sweaters and woolens were lined up—all set!
But now those warm clothes are just causing a sweat.

Winter, white winter, I'm waving goodbye.
The fun frosty glimmer is leaving my eye.
There's talk of the beach, and kites in the sky.
So I'm filing you away for seasons gone by.

Birchbox

If you paid close attention to my birthday post, I mentioned Birchbox. I thought I'd elaborate a little on such a big idea. My very smart, beautiful, and savvy sister-in-law, Katia, started a business last year as she was finishing up her MBA at Harvard (I said she was smart...). The idea was to offer a subscription-based program for beauty samples. Each month you would receive a happy little box with high-end samples of beauty products from top brands. You could try them out, then come back to order full sized products at a discount. Katia and her co-founder, Hayley, made that idea a reality, and launched Birchbox.
For for Christmas my parents gifted me a year's subscription to Birchbox. I have already received two months of Birchbox, and it's such a fun surprise to find a hot pink box on your door step! It's $10/month, or $110/year. Plus there are benefits like member points and product discounts. One commenter asked in my last post if it's worth it, and I have to tell you YES, totally. You can also find beauty tips, tricks, and how-tos. Here's a video telling more:

This was NOT a sponsored post. I just love Birchbox and those Smarty Pants. :)

Birthday Wish

Today I turn 31! I think I'll give myself a mini facial and paint my nails (thanks to Birchbox and Essie). So what's my birthday wish? Hmmmm. Possibly that a company of small elves will move into the space under my hall closet, and commence cleaning duties. Or that I could have some wintery weather again (which realistically won't happen until next December for exactly 2 weeks, tops). But other than that, I'm just hoping for a quiet happy day with the kids. I plan to bake something sugary and delicious to both bribe them to have good attitudes, and to indulge in while I watch a movie during nap time. On behalf of the Birthday Girl, I hope your day is awesome! :)

On a side note, I share my birthday with Paul Cezanne. Not to shabby, that guy!

Gearing up for Super!

Guess what's coming up? That's right! Supermom Series 2011. I feel like it's been a while. This year I've asked the Supermoms to make some resolutions (whether they like it or not). So grab a button (which links to the entire series, even years past, if you want to check out other Supermoms), and get ready for some super answers from some super women. (That sure was a lot of supers...)

I was able to expand my buttons this year to include more than just bottle blonds (hard to come by anything else in this style). I hope there's one for everyone. :)

A Handmade Christmas: Recipe Dishtowels

This year most of my gifts were handmade. Either handmade by myself, or purchased from handmade artists. One of my favorite gifts to make turned out to be these dish towels. Here is the inspiration: (click image for a link to the original site)

To recreate them, I started with recipes I tweaked a bit in Photoshop to make them look antiqued:
(feel free to click on the images to enlarge, then print out the recipes to enjoy)
Then I ironed them on flour sack dish towels. Here are the final products, ready to gift:

Then I finished everything off by printing out each recipe at 4x6 on cardstock, to include with the towels. I laminated the fronts for protection, leaving the backs blank for notes.

Christmas Part 4: FUN!

We really did have some fun moments. The tepee my mom made for the kids was SO fantastic. I cant wait to set it up at my house. I  hung a little lantern in it, and seriously considered sleeping down stairs in the tepee next to the Christmas tree lights. Sigh.

My mom's Birthday is on Christmas Day, which is so special! And this year I hand made the decorations (ornament balls for a center piece, "Oh Happy Day" banner, fabric and felt napkin rings, and place cards. And she still has the little cake I made for her out of felt last year. It was a fun addition.

My brother is such a good sport to sport that elf hat, no?

Up next: the surprisingly small stash of photos taken in Mesa—the second half of our trip. I think because Maya was feeling better, I had even LESS time to photograph things (chasing and saving were high on my priority list).

Christmas Part 3: Family

We had a good turn-out this year! My little family, my brother and his wifey (Greg & Katia), my Aunt Shannon (my mom's sister), and her daughter (my cousin Kelsey), all hung out under my parents' roof. You'd think with that many people that there would be plenty of opportunity to sneak off and leave the kids with someone else, or hang out and relax. But instead, Maya decided she didn't want ANYONE other than me (not even Wes) touching, feeding, consoling, talking to, holding, bathing, kissing, playing with, or generally looking at her. This was mostly because of a bad cold, cough, and ear infection. But suffice it to say, my left arm muscle is substantially more sore than my right—and still is. She had her good moments, but most of the time she was playing Miss Pouty Pants (so was I). Mom, Dad, please come visit us and see that Maya does in fact love and remember you. She'll even give you kisses before bed. Promise!

Aunt Shannon had these awesome feathers in her hair. I'd never seen them before. They suited her perfectly. Katia was the epitome of fashion and lovliness. Believe me when I tell you that she probably caused a few heart attacks at the local Walmart. I thought I was looking good in my new winter coat until Katia walked out in her new winter coat. I almost passed out. A fur collar, cinched waist, and perfectly placed zippers may or may not have been involved.

Wes and Greg talked film and tech. And Kelsey was the easy-going beautiful addition that she always is. Finn asked if her tiny and tasteful nose ring meant she was a pirate. She said YES. Finn thought she was the coolest from there on out, and kept whispering something to me that sounded like "Captain Jack Sparrow."

My mom had been really sick, so my Dad was running the show. And he was doing a darn good job of it! Although my mom rallied in time for us to take Finn to the live production of Rudolph the Red Nosed Raindeer in Ft. Worth. He loved it—even if he did insist on sitting on my lap the whole time. It was his first play. I think theater attendance is in his future.

I tried not to act like a complete zombie the entire trip. I really do have to apologize to everyone. I was like a weird version of myself. And I know this because Wes kept concernedy pulling me aside in the hall to tell me so. He seemed genuinely worried. Probably because I was "sleeping" sitting up with Maya on my chest every night so that she could breathe, the poor dear (me, not Maya...I have no sympathy for that crazy little kiddo...jk). I averaged about 3-4 hours of sporadic sleep a night. And I insisted on not napping when she did, so that I wouldn't miss a single game of Farkle, or gingerbread house creation, or screening of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. I have a feeling everyone probably thought my head had popped off on Christmas morning, and not Woody's! Good thing Christmas comes around again and again, so that I can make up for it with properly rested future merriment!

It really was good to see everyone. I love my family, and even if we're not all in the best health or state of mind, it's better to be together than apart.
